I want to talk to you a bit today about detoxing.
Now this is a really hot buzzword these days, and everyone’s doing it and everyone’s talking about it, but what does it really mean, anyway?
Obviously the notion is that you want to rid your body of toxins, but what you have to remember is that that’s going on all the time. Your liver- which is ground zero for detoxification- is always in the process of removing chemicals and toxins that don’t belong in the body, whether those toxins come from the air, the water, our food supply, carcinogenic smoke, prescription medicines, or anything else. The liver does this with a two-phase system of enzymes known as the Cytochrome P450 enzymes. And this whole detoxification is very nutrient dependent.
Now you really don’t need expensive detox kits to do an effective detox. All you’re really trying to do when you “detox” is simply give the liver a little help.
So the first thing you want to do is NOT add to its toxic burden. It’s like when you’re trying to clean up your desk, the last thing you want is more stuff in your inbox- you’re trying to take care of the stuff that’s already piled up in there!
So the first step to any detox is to stop eating junk. You want to eliminate any additional burdens, so you want to eat really clean during a detox. It can even be as simple as Dr. Elson Haas’s SNACC program: no SNACC—sugar, nicotine, alcohol, caffeine and chemicals…That’s ONE way to do it—but there are many others. You can do an extreme version and just drink vegetable juice, broths and some clean protein; you can do it with medical foods like Ultra Clear—you can do it with raw foods—or you can do it with a good, simple, low-tech eating plan of clean protein, vegetables, fruits, and some extra nutrients to help the liver perform it’s magic.
You can do a really wonderful detox using juices, broths, water, and clean protein. The protein is important– you really don’t want to go any length of time without it since protein is so vital to the body for making biochemical like hormones, and structures like bones and muscles. And you want to make sure you’re getting plenty of alkalizing nutrients from vegetables at the same time.
Two products that I think make an excellent addition to a detox program are high quality protein powder, and a green drink. In addition, you’ll want to take a supplement for your liver, one that helps it do its job better and supports liver health in general.
If you’ve looked over our website store, you probably know we carry three protein powders- these are all incredible, excellent products, with slightly different tastes and composition, but all are first class. Our best seller- Whey Cool Protein- is the one many of you know about. But our other two- Paleomeal and Dream Protein- are incredible. Paleomeal has only 100 calories per serving, and provides 17 grams of high quality protein plus 3 grams of fiber and is fortified with CLA, vitamins, immunoglobulins and enzymes. Dream Protein is hormone free, sweetened with Stevia, is made from ultra-low temperature protein isolate and provides 20 grams of protein per serving for only 86 calories. Both use only the highest quality ingredients.
The other product I recommend for your detox is a staple in my house- it’s called Barlean’s Greens and it’s made from extracts of wheatgrass, spinach, spirulina, and all kinds of other cool things. It’s low in calories, won’t spike your blood sugar, and provides a ton of detoxifying nutrients like chorella which is found in so many of the green grasses.
A detox formula for the liver that I really like a lot is Vital Nutrients’ DETOX FORMULA. It contains milk thistle- which is the most liver friendly herb on earth- plus taurine, glutamine, glycine, N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, grape seed extract, broccoli powder and other ingredients known to support liver health and provide the nutrients needed for the liver to do the best possible job detoxifying your body
